Analysis- Darwin Deez "Radar Detector"

This is the official music video for "Radar Detector" By American Indie Folk artist Darwin Deez.

  • The cinematography again is very simple, mainly long, mid or close up shots of Darwin and a model like girl. However there is one sequence where he has created a disposable camera helmet and can take pictures from all angles, as he takes snapshots of location he has turned to a different angle, so when sped up in editing he is spinning on the spot and the location changes. Then photos are put together in a circle and moved around to show an all around view of the locations, This is something I want to try myself for my video.
  • There is alot of editing in this video the background is constantly changing colour, or there is a very artificial photo background used for example space, a desert, and a road It is supposed to have a low budget style to it. I like the style of the disposable camera photos also. Colour is used alot in this video for background especially and also objects like the lilo's and feathers thrown around at times, They are all "ice cream" 50's style colours.
  • The costumes in this video change quite alot, for Darwin himself and also for the girl used in the video for example the sequence of her sat in the same place but her make up, clothes and hair is changing, this would be an interesting idea to try out myself. I think the video is based around inventions for example the camera machine, fork fangs, drink dispenser ect. and I really liked the idea of the type writer that was writing out the lyrics this is definitely an idea I want to take into my own video.
  • Another thing I really liked was the opening introduction of waffle pieces spelling DARWIN DEEZ IN RADAR DETECTOR, it links loosely to the Napoleon dynamite idea I planned to use where food is used as opening titles.
  • The only part where image matched lyrical content was the line "Im driving.." and they were in a kiddies car going along a fake background road. Alot of the rest was just artistic, however a "radar detector" sounds like a strange invention so this links with the props used.

Analysis- Bombay Bicycle Club "Always Like This"

This is the official video for "Always Like This" by Indie artists Bombay Bicycle Club.

  • Simple cinematography, mainly long shots or mid shots of band members, or location. A few close ups included of band members faces and instruments - image matching sound. I like how there is alot of clips of location, simple everyday life shops and places you will see in any town strung together in a sequence.
  • The editing is most effective it is in home video style, and the quality is constantly switching between high realistic quality to low quality being filmed from a television screen. Also the settings switch between pause to playing and fast-forwarding so actions are quite jolty but it gives a very good home- made style to the video. I mostly like the "white noise" television effect at the very beginning of the video. Also the multicoloured garage doors changing colour and quality with the boy standing playing guitar throughout, it is very simple but I like the style of it and would like to use something like this in my own promo.
  • The lighting is quite natural, the shots are taken mostly outside. The colour used is bright and has a polariod effect to it making it look retro and home made. I really like the shot of different coloured lights with the camera unfocused, it had a glittery/glowing effect followed by the man stood outside a lamp store, window full of different styled old fashioned lamps, only obvious un-natural lighting used is in the night time sequence, alot of brightly lit shop windows ect.
  • The costume is casual, jeans and t shirts suiting the "indie" style of the band.
  • There isn't any obvious link between image and lyrics it is mainly the band and location so they have broken the boundaries and matched the image to the style of the upbeat music, making it more artistic than meaningful.

Analysis- Laura Marling "New Romantic"

Embedding was disabled on youtube so I have provided the link instead.
This is the official music video for "New Romantic" by folk artist Laura Marling.

  • The cinematography is very simple, close ups of artists face- many music video producers use this to promote the artist, keep them in the limelight of the video. Also mid shots and long shots to show what is going on around Laura, shadows on walls and floor. There are also some close ups of the shadows themselves as they are imagery that matches the song and lyrics creating the narrative.
  • The lighting is key in this music video as it is all about use of shadows, the lighting is very spotlight and artificial, spotlight is always on Laura and also a spotlight for where the silhouette is. Each silhouette matches the lyric for that part of the song for example the opening lines "I know I said I love you" I LOVE YOU is floating across the background, "But I'm thinking I was wrong" A cross comes across Laura's top half representing the negativity. "I'm the first to admit that I'm Still Pretty Young" YOUNG floats across behind her, "And I never meant to hurt you and I wrote you ten love songs" Now the camera has moved to the side of Laura and love heart shaped musical notes represent the "songs". Also the silhouette of the guitar strings being played match the acoustic style of the song. This use of silhouette/shadow is something I would like to try for my own video.
  • Laura stays in the same costume of black skinny jeans and a grey long sleeved top throughout the video and stays sat in the same place on a stool in the middle of a dimly lit plain room. The use of dark colours and plain walls make the silhouettes and Laura's blonde hair and pale face the main focus of the video, the idea is that the shadows tell the story.
  • The song is about falling in and out of love, she makes a boy leave a girl for her, falls out of love with him and in love with a friend, but doesn't really mean to hurt anyone. I think "new romantic" may represent being with someone and not feeling the same way for them? Its about how confusing "young" love can be.

Bon Iver- Skinny Love

The artist I would like to use is Bon Iver. Bon Iver is a band founded in 2007 by American indie folk singer-songwriter Justin Vernon. The band now also consists of Michael Noyce, Sean Carey, and Matthew McCaughan. The name, Bon Iver, is a play on the French phrase "bon hiver", meaning good winter, Their album For Emma, Forever ago was released in 2007.
I Will hopefully be using the song Skinny love. (un-official video in link) But I must ask the artists permission first.

Inspiration- Napoleon Dynamite Title Sequence

Unfortunately I could not find a small youtube clip so I have taken screenshots instead.

This is the title sequence to the film "Napoleon Dynamite" I like the way plates of food are used as the title sequence it gave me an idea to use this technique as my own title sequence introducing the name of song, artist and myself the producer.
I also like the way colour is used to give a vintage effect to the sequence and retro style food is used and also retro tablecloths, carpets ect for backgrounds. This also uses scraps of paper and stationary layed out as titles.
The way the camera slowly focuses on pieces of paper and writing held up to the camera is effective it gives it an amateur/home-made style.

Inspiration- "Beneath The Rose" BBC Film Network

I searched through the BBC Film Network to look at music videos and found instant inspiration from "Beneath the rose" The video shows a snail exploring a house, followed by lots of snails, it then goes on to show a man and woman I didn't quite understand the narrative so I read the film credits.
"Time slows down when you're that small. Or maybe it goes by faster. Another day at home. But something strange starts to happen. Something glides over the bed. Slimy things start to enter this domestic setting and to take over. Both beautiful and alarming. It is the dark side of everyday life and love. And it only gets worse."

I really liked the way that elements were sped up in editing for example shadows, trees blowing in the wind and rain on a window. It gave me ideas to use this editing technique to show how things change over time such as light, shadow, water and fire also to show decay.
I also like the way they have used colour, brightness and contrast in editing to make a vintage effect on the film along with the objects/props used in the film such as the pastel coloured chair, the bed white sheets look old fashioned with lace and the bathroom is very classic and all white again. Another technique I thought effective was the snail behind the glass of water, the way it magnifies as it goes by. The final thing to inspire me was the close up shots of a woman's face behind flowers, I liked the way they kept her hair and make up natural and used lighting and contrast to bring out her skin and eyes.
